The player would be an astute piece of business if the Red Devils could somehow pull it off.
Well, the Dutch took on Poland this weekend, with one journalist asking De Jong directly about a possible United transfer. De Jong did respond, but the midfielder kept it pretty standard…
When asked by a reporter about possibly leaving Barca for United De Jong said:
“I can’t say anything,” De Jong simply responded, according to ESport3.
What leaves me intrigued here is the fact that De Jong doesn’t rule it out. If he was 100% staying with Barca this summer, he’d have done exactly that and quashed all the rumours.
The fact that he remains tight-lipped suggests that De Jong believes there’s a real possibility he is sold by Barcelona during this transfer window. Whether or not United can win the race for his signature is a different matter entirely.
We fans have to be realistic going into this transfer window. United do not have Champions League football on the table this summer. Other potential buyers will absolutely be able to offer De Jong exactly that.
What United do have in their favour is the Ten Hag factor. The Dutch manager got the absolute maximum out of De Jong during their time together at Ajax – making a Champions League semi-final on the way. Perhaps the lure of working with his former boss swings the De Jong pendulum back in our favour.
