Arsenal are not prioritising a deal for Real Betis midfielder Guido Rodriguez this summer, according to Estadio Deportivo.
The Seville-based newspaper reports that, while the Gunners have made enquiries for the 27-year-old, he is now only considered “an alternative” if moves for other players don’t work out.
Rodriguez has become a regular starter for Argentina at the Copa America, having started four of their six matches, with his country progressing to the final of the competition.
Estadio Deportivo claim his exploits at the tournament will only increase his transfer value further, with the player already having an €80m (£69m) release clause.
It seems Arsenal are looking at cheaper options, with a deal for Anderlecht’s Albert Sambi Lokonga expected to be completed in a matter of days. The Gunners could still make a move for another midfielder in the coming weeks, but that is likely to be dependent on Granit Xhaka leaving the Emirates.
