BT Sport pundit Joe Cole says he is a huge admirer of Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli, following the player’s recent run of good form.
Having watched Martinelli in action, Cole says he can see similarities between the Brazilian and two former Premier League stars:
“This lad is outstanding, Martinelli. I’ve always been a big fan of his. He reminds me of a young Aguero, who is busy, just like Alexis Sanchez.”
It’s certainly high praise from Cole but Martinelli still has a long way to go before he can be compared to either Aguero or Sanchez.
While Sanchez may have left the Emirates in controversial circumstances, you can’t dispute his impact at the club, having scored 80 goals in only 166 appearances.
When it comes to Aguero, it is even a greater compliment for Martinelli to be even mentioned in the same breath. The Argentine is fourth on the all-time leading scorers’ list in the Premier League era.
If Martinelli gets anywhere close to matching Aguero’s individual achievements, he will have done extraordinarily well. While it’s probably unwise to burden the 20-year-old with such expectations, he is undoubtedly a very promising young player.
