Arsenal legend Ian Wright has questioned Ben White’s actions in the lead up to Southampton’s winning goal yesterday afternoon.

White appeared to get injured from the corner that preceded Jan Bednarek slotting the ball past Aaron Ramsdale. The Gunners defender can be seen on the floor off the pitch before quickly getting up in an attempt to close down Bednarek. By the time he had done that, though, it was too late, leaving Wright rather perplexed:

“He (Bednarek) does well. I am very confused as to what Ben White is doing there. I think somebody has to get out to Bednarek. No one gets out to him and he’s finished it well.”

It’s not unheard of for a player to go down after a corner in order to curry favour with the referee and get a free-kick but, in this instance, White was off the pitch, so the official was unlikely to give a foul.

Realising no whistle was coming, it appears the centre-back got off the ground to get back in position, but he didn’t do it in time to block Bednarek’s shot. A rather strange set of circumstances, which ended up costing Arsenal dearly.
