BT Sport pundit Michael Owen is expecting Arsenal to suffer a second successive defeat when they face Chelsea at the Emirates today.
The former England international was not impressed by what he saw of the Gunners against Brentford last week and he expects Chelsea to come away with a convincing win in the London derby:
“Have they improved much from where they were last season? I don’t think so. I’d be surprised if they finished any higher than sixth this season. It’s a totally different story at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea are looking formidable. They remain such a difficult side to score against and I think Lukaku will be a brilliant signing for them. They finished fourth with Jorginho as their top scorer last season with seven, so imagine what they could do with a prolific striker. Anything can happen in derbies, but this London Derby looks like a mismatch. I think Chelsea will comfortably win.”
Owen is backing Chelsea to record a 2-0 victory, which is a harsh but fair prediction, considering the form of the two sides heading into this evening’s encounter.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is likely to be without at least five first-team players due to injuries and illness, while there are also doubts over Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Willian.
When you also factor in their other on-field problems, the prospects of getting off the mark against Chelsea look quite slim, especially with the Blues looking strong in their opening day win against Crystal Palace.
Saying that, though, the Gunners did pull off a surprise double in the league over Thomas Tuchel’s side last season so we shall see if they can pull another one out of the hat.
