Former Arsenal and Liverpool midfielder Michael Thomas believes the Gunners should be looking to re-sign Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry.
The German international left the Emirates five and a half years ago but talks over a contract extension with Bayern have stalled. With his current deal set to expire in 2023, he could be sold in the summer with Liverpool and Manchester United both reportedly interested. However, Thomas thinks a return to London may be the better option for the player:
“Gnabry since leaving Arsenal has been exceptional. He has become a major part of a massive club like Bayern Munich but also Germany. I am not sure what his situation is at his current club but if either of my former clubs could get him in, it would be a major statement.”
“If he does go to Liverpool it would be hard to see where he would fit in, given the amount of options in forward areas. Then again, you could perhaps see one of the two wide-men, Salah or Mane, leaving in the summer. Arsenal are perhaps more suited for him and I know he still loves the club, so you never know.”
Considering Gnabry’s superb performances for Bayern and Germany in recent seasons, Arsenal would undoubtedly be keen on re-signing the 26-year-old. Whether that is likely, though, it is doubtful.
The forward’s priority is still to stay at Bayern if at all possible and, even if he were to leave the Allianz Arena, the Gunners would face fierce competition from other clubs, like Liverpool, who could offer him better chances of winning silverware.
