Real Madrid attacking midfielder Martin Odegaard does remain a “viable alternative” for Arsenal if a move for Leicester’s James Maddison doesn’t work out, according to TheAFCBell

The reliable Twitter ITK claims the Gunners still see Maddison as the number one target, but they are prepared to revive their interest in Odegaard if necessary before the transfer window closes:

“The preparatory work for James Maddison’s deal, with the player’s camp preceded the signing of Martin Odegaard for months, and therefore he is the #1 option for the club. As we mentioned in January, Odegaard may provide a viable alternative if Objective #1 cannot be signed.”

The main issue with Maddison is trying to get Leicester to compromise on their asking price. Comments from manager Brendan Rodgers that made comparisons to Jack Grealish were just posturing and the Foxes are not looking for anything close to £100m.

TheAFCBell believes £60m would be enough to secure the 24-year-old’s services this summer and the £25m they could receive from the sale of Joe Willock to Newcastle could help them meet the valuation.

Negotiations are still complicated, though, and it may well be the case that Arsenal re-enter talks for Odegaard if things don’t progress on the Maddison deal in the coming weeks.
