Arsenal defender Rob Holding is not a transfer target for Newcastle United, according to Football.London journalist Chris Wheatley.
The website’s Gunners correspondent responded to rumours that the Magpies were looking to sign the 25-year-old by saying there was nothing in the story:
Rob Holding’s situation hasn’t changed and speculation of a move to Newcastle is nothing more than a rumour.
There hasn’t been any contact from the Magpies since last summer. #AFC #NUFC https://t.co/DhsJhLh1TD

The majority of fans on Twitter were rather disappointed by Wheatley’s rebuttal, with many hoping that Holding would be offloaded before the transfer window closed:
we should sell him

Some supporters are being rather harsh on Holding. Although he isn’t a world-class defender, he usually does a solid job when called upon by manager Mikel Arteta.
With Ben White having been signed from Brighton this summer, Holding is unlikely to be a regular fixture in the starting lineup anyway, barring injuries, and he is certainly more than good enough to be a squad player going forward.
Of course, if Arsenal do receive a high enough offer for the centre-half, the London club may be wise to cash in but, at the moment, he is unlikely to leave the Emirates.
