Philadelphia Union centre-back Mark McKenzie is closing in on a move to Belgian Pro League side Racing Genk, according to reports in the American media.

It is believed a fee worth $6m (£4.4m) plus add-ons has been agreed, with the 21-year-old expected to leave the United States for Europe when the transfer window opens next month.

McKenzie had been on Celtic’s radar for quite a while, with claims suggesting that the Scottish champions had a $4m offer (including performance-related bonuses) rejected by Philadelphia Union only a couple of months ago.

The defender had previously expressed his interest in following the “path of Virgil van Dijk” by moving to the Hoops but it seems Neil Lennon’s side were unwilling to match Genk’s sizeable offer for the player.

English and German clubs have also reportedly been keeping tabs on McKenzie recently but it seems his switch to Belgium is now very close to being finalised.
