Celtic’s main rival for VVV Venlo striker Georgios Giakoumakis’s signature has pulled out of the race for the Greek international.

Along with the Hoops, Werder Bremen were keen on snapping up the 26-year-old but De Limberger claim that the German club were unable to meet the forward’s wage demands:

It also remains to be seen whether Celtic will be able to agree personal terms with Giakoumakis. Greek journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos claimed yesterday that Bremen were actually closer to agreeing a salary than the Scottish club.

Most sources believe that the Hoops have matched VVV Venlo’s asking price for the player, which stands at around €2.5m (£2.1m), but negotiations have now been going on for quite a while.

With the transfer window set to close on Tuesday, Celtic don’t have a lot of time to clinch a deal for Giakoumakis. The Greek poacher scored 29 goals in all competitions last season and is likely being lined up as Odsonne Edouard‘s replacement.
