Celtic and Southampton have joined the race to sign Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, according to reports in the local media.

The 24-year-old impressed during a loan spell with Swansea City last season, leading to interest from Arsenal, and it is believed that he could be let go by the Magpies this summer.

Steve Bruce’s side already have three first-team keepers in Martin Dubravka, Karl Darlow and Mark Gillespie so Woodman is likely to be sent out on a temporary basis again next campaign.

The former England Under 21 international has had two spells in Scotland before. He spent six months with Kilmarnock in 2017 and a similar period of time with Aberdeen in 2018.

Before his switch to Pittodrie, Celtic were said to be considering a move for Woodman and it appears they have been keeping tabs on him since then. Considering the Hoops desperately need a new number one, following Vasilios Barkas’s struggles, the Englishman may well fit the bill.
