Celtic are preparing to make a move for Shanghai SIPG attacking midfielder Aaron Mooy, according to reports in the English media.

The Australian international only moved to China from Brighton last summer, and he is said to be earning £3m a year (around £57,000 a week) in the Far East.

However, Mooy is believed to be seeking a transfer with the global health crisis preventing him from seeing his family as often as he would like. With Shanghai reportedly sympathetic to the 30-year-old’s situation, they are said to be willing to let him leave for the right price.

Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou is, unsurprisingly, the driving force behind the transfer after working with the playmaker when he was Australia’s head coach.

Whether Celtic will be able to afford to sign Mooy, though, it is debatable. His salary demands could prove prohibitive, while Shanghai will probably want to recoup the £4m they paid Brighton for the player.
