They [AIK Stockholm] know well about my situation, but we have not spoken about any contract.
I mean, I have been quite open that I might want to finish my career in Sweden. Clearly I think about it, but I have a lot to do.
Lustig has been a much criticised player over the last 18 months after a drop in performance levels but recently his reputation has rebounded.
The arrival of Jeremy Toljan from Borussia Dortmund gave plenty of fans a reality check when it comes to the future of the right-back position and it’s become clear that the Swede is not the worst option, at least as back-up.
Celtic defender Mikael Lustig has stated he will find out this week whether he’s done enough to earn a new contract at the Hoops, as reported by The Daily Record.
The Swedish international’s current deal expires at the end of the season but he has been in discussions about staying beyond that.
With the 32-year-old also attracting interest from his homeland, he isn’t lacking for options but certainly sounds like he’d prefer to stay in Glasgow.
As quoted by The Daily Record, he said of his future this weekend:
The Hoops are reportedly “optimistic” that they can secure the 32-year-old for a second consecutive campaign with the Saints not keen on keeping the shot-stopper
Forster himself has already expressed his desire to stay at Parkhead while manager Neil Lennon has openly stated that he’d like the Englishman to remain with the Scottish champions.
A loan would be a perfect solution for Celtic, in light of the current financial climate. The player’s wages, combined with a significant transfer fee, always made a permanent move seem unlikely.
Forster still has two years to run on his contract at St Mary’s but if they do secure him on a temporary basis once again, they could be in a position to sign him next summer with his deal running into its final year.
