Ex-Celtic player Charlie Nicholas believes Celtic should make an ambitious approach to sign Monaco midfielder Cesc Fabregas.

The former Chelsea and Arsenal player is not currently a regular starter with his current club, and Nicholas thinks manager Ange Postecoglou may have a chance of persuading him to make the move to Scotland:

“I would like [Celtic] to go into the market and try get somebody like Cesc Fabregas. I spoke to him in December when we were both at an Arsenal game. He is still fit as a flea and he isn’t getting a game at Monaco. I know speaking to him that he wants to keep playing for the next year or two.”

“I know Celtic maybe couldn’t afford his salary but maybe they could come to an agreement with Monaco. I feel the team needs a Lubo Moravcik-type and Cesc would be perfect. If Ange was looking for stardust then I would ask Cesc the question. He is still only 34.”

It is a pretty crazy suggestion from Nicholas and it should be pointed out that a key reason why Fabregas is not playing currently is due to injury.

The 34-year-old has been sidelined with a hamstring problem since late September and, combined with his sizeable salary, it would be a very difficult move for the Hoops to pull off.

Of course, Fabregas is an outstanding player. His 110 caps for Spain are a testament to that, but the obstacles that would have to be overcome for a transfer to happen would suggest a bid from Celtic is very unlikely.
