Celtic’s hopes of snapping up Southampton duo Fraser Forster and Mohamed Elyounoussi may well rest on the Saints accepting another loan deal due to the astronomical wages the pair are currently earning.
The Sunday Times and Daily Record reporter Duncan Castles claimed on his Transfer Window Podcast that Forster is earning £3.6m a year, while Elyounoussi is only on a little less at £3.1m year.
It means signing the two players on a permanent basis could well be out of Celtic’s reach. It is thought that Forster would be willing to take a wage cut if a return to Glasgow is a possibility.
However, with the 32-year-old earning £70,000 a week, it will require him to take a significant reduction to force through a move. Elyounoussi would also need to take a sizeable hit on his £60,000 a weekly salary.
One positive for Celtic is the fact Southampton are suffering financial difficulties so they would likely be keen to get the two fringe players off their wage bill. At this stage, though, another loan agreement appears to be the likeliest outcome.
