European clubs have backed plans for two clubs to qualify for the revamped Champions League based on historical performance.

A single 36 team league will replace the group stages from the 2024/25 season, but plans for how the 35th and 36th teams would qualify had not been decided until now.

It has been agreed that clubs, who would have otherwise qualified for the Europa League but have a high ranking club coefficient, could essentially be upgraded to play in the Champions League.

Whether this could impact the likes of Celtic, it is difficult to know at this stage, as the Hoops would need some excellent performances in the coming seasons to improve their coefficient ranking to be in the running.

Of course, the other 34 places will be awarded to teams based purely on their final league positions so, if Ange Postecoglou’s side do finish top of the Scottish Premiership, they are expected to be involved regardless.
