Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor has upped his game since being made club captain, according to Barry Ferguson.

There were doubts over the 28-year-old before he took the armband from Scott Brown, but Ferguson believes that McGregor has silenced any critics with his excellent displays this season:

“Callum McGregor has taken his game up to another level since he has been named captain. Callum has taken the captaincy really well and a lot of people were really questioning whether that would be the right idea. ut he has proven it with the performance he has put on for Celtic.”

McGregor has certainly impressed since taking on the mantle. He has big shoes to fill following Brown’s departure but he has so far shown that he is more than up to the challenge.

The arrival of Ange Postecoglou as manager has undoubtedly helped McGregor to perform in the middle of the park. The Hoops boss plays a much more expansive brand of football than his predecessor in the job, allowing players to express themselves more on the ball.

McGregor still has some way to go before replicating the numbers he was producing between 2016 and 2020 but the signs are there that he will be a key playmaker in midfield for Celtic once again.
