Eddie Howe’s request to be given the weekend to decide whether to take the Celtic job was partially motivated by the hope that he may receive offers from clubs south of the border, according to journalist Mark Guidi.

Both Newcastle United and Crystal Palace have been tipped as potential alternative destinations for Howe and Guidi told Go Radio’s Football Show that the 43-year-old is keeping his options open:

“The jobs his if he wants it and I think he’s going to take the weekend to think about it. I think also part of the process from his representatives will be to see if there any other interested parties down south and basically they have got two or three days to show their hand if they want Eddie Howe.”

Most journalists believe that the Englishman is very likely to be named Celtic’s next manager, barring any last-minute hiccups, and the fact that he is taking his time before making a final decision is understandable.

However, Guidi’s assertion that Howe has not committed to the club due to the fact he is open to other offers, is slightly concerning. You would expect him to be chomping at the bit to take over at the Scottish club but it could simply be the case that he is studiously considering every option before deciding to sign on the dotted line.
