The decision by the government to stop fans from returning to stadiums for an indefinite period will leave clubs like Celtic in a perilous financial position, according to manager Neil Lennon.

With so much uncertainty surrounding the future of football in Scotland, Lennon also stated that the lack of matchday revenue could also impact the Hoops’ plans for the remainder of the transfer window:

“It has been difficult to predict and navigate what this transfer window is going to be like. There has been some money spent but not in the bundles you would expect. Clubs have been wary and the news on Tuesday may have made them more cautious, so we are not exclusive to that. That will be something Peter [Lawwell] and the board will be looking very hard at.”

First minister Nicola Sturgeon told the Scottish Parliament on Tuesday that the planned return of supporters to sports grounds on October 5th would no longer be given the go-ahead due to the recent spike in COVID-19 cases.

The UK government went even further with the Department of Culture, Media and Sports having told governing bodies in England that they shouldn’t expect to have fans back in stadiums before the end of March.

Financial support for clubs would no doubt be needed during that time and we shall have to wait and see how the decision directly impacts Celtic.
