Whilst praising the consistency of the Hoops over the past decade, Smith went out of his way to correct himself when he stated the Old Firm rivals had won nine in a row:

“We’ve had a lot of years now where Celtic have been uppermost in the league. They’ve had a really good team and managed to win nine championships in a row. Well, eight championships in a row and now this one for the ninth.”

Needless to say, Smith’s remark did not go down too well among Celtic fans on Twitter:

It is a subject that supporters from the two rival teams will continue to debate long into the night, but it can’t be seriously argued that the Hoops would have lost their 13 point lead at the top of the table in the final nine games.

The real motivation behind these comments from former Gers players and managers is to de-legitimise Celtic’s claims if they make it ten in a row next season.

With the gap between the two sides, you wouldn’t put it past the Bhoys going on to win the next two league titles anyway; putting to bed any debate about legitimacy.
