Former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer claims that derbies between Celtic and Rangers are like no other in football.
The ex-England international was responding to comments made by Gary Lineker, who remarked about the hatred between the two sets of fans, when he commented on the ferocity of the games both at Parkhead and Ibrox:
“I’ve been to a lot of these games, but that Glasgow Derby is something else. My god – it is ferocious at both grounds, Celtic and Rangers. It’s proper hatred. It’s something different up there.”
Shearer has played in Tyne-Wear derbies for Newcastle, whilst he has also been present at Manchester, Merseyside and an assortment of London derbies during his time as a pundit, so he does know a thing or two about these types of games.
For him to state that Celtic/Rangers games are right at the top when it comes to fierce rivalry is saying something, but it isn’t at all surprising for Hoops supporters who have experienced the animosity between the two Glasgow clubs firsthand.
The last derby of the season will be held at Celtic Park this Sunday, and the home side could all but seal the Premiership title with a win.
