Former Schalke manager David Wagner is interested in taking the Celtic job, according to multiple reports in the UK.

The 49-year-old is best known for turning Huddersfield from a team struggling in the English Championship to being promoted to the Premier League.

However, Wagner’s spell at Schalke was far less successful, lasting only 14 months before being sacked with the Bundesliga club sitting in the relegation places.

Whether that failure will put off Celtic from considering the German, we shall have to wait and see. Other names such as Rafa Benitez, Roberto Martinez, Eddie Howe, Frank Lampard and Dan Petrescu have been mentioned as possible options but the Hoops are yet to draw up a shortlist of candidates.

There is a concern that the Scottish champions may have to wait until Dominic McKay is named chief executive in the summer before appointing a new manager, but there will be pressure to make a decision before then in order to give the new man as much time as possible to rebuild the squad.
