Celtic defender Carl Starfelt is likely to be dropped once Christopher Jullien finally recovers full fitness, according to Chris Sutton.

The former Hoops striker has not been impressed with the Swedish international since his £4m move from Rubin Kazan in the summer and he believes manager Ange Postecoglou won’t keep faith with the centre-back much longer:

“At this stage, I’d have to say Carl Starfelt has so far struggled. Christopher Jullien’s return may see the Swede take a back seat.”

Starfelt has been very inconsistent since moving to Parkhead, and it remains to be seen whether he can keep his place in the starting lineup when Jullien returns.

However, it must be pointed out that not all of the criticism aimed towards the 26-year-old has been warranted. He was thrown into the deep end after no pre-season for his debut against Hearts. Unsurprisingly, he did struggle at Tynecastle and his performances have been put under the microscope ever since.

While Starfelt can’t be excused for some of the mistakes he has made, he has started 16 Premiership matches, in a season where Celtic have, so far, had the best defence in the division.
