TalkSPORT pundit Martin Keown has called on Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta to remain with the Blues until he hangs up his boots.

There has been some speculation that the defender could return to Spain this summer, but Keown feels the 32-year-old should remain at Stamford Bridge and mentor some of the young players:

“Why does Azpilicueta really want to go anywhere else? Maybe he should just see out his career there. He has been magnificent for Chelsea. Can he not just be a player that everyone has in the dressing room that others learn from?”

Reports last week suggested that Azpilicueta was weighing up whether to commit his future to the Blues or sign a longer-term contract with Barcelona.

Manager Thomas Tuchel has since confirmed that the Spaniard’s current deal has been automatically extended for another season after playing the requisite number of games.

However, there are claims that, even with an extension, Azpilicueta has been promised by the current ownership that he can still leave on a free transfer if he wishes to do so.

Whether that promise will be kept after the takeover happens, we shall have to wait and see.
