Paul Merson claims the next few matches will give us a big indication about whether Thomas Tuchel has faith in Romelu Lukaku.
Since returning from an ankle injury last month, the Chelsea striker has more often than not been left on the bench, and Merson has raised doubts about Tuchel’s relationship with the club’s record signing:
“The only question for Chelsea is Romelu Lukaku’s situation. He’s clearly back fully fit now, but when is he going to get back into the team? If he stays on the bench for a few more games, people will start to wonder if Thomas Tuchel really fancies him or not.”
It’s definitely a bit too early to read anything into Lukaku’s lack of match action in recent league games. As Merson says himself, we will find out more in upcoming matches where the Belgian international stands.
Lukaku did start against Zenit St Petersburg last week but, with the Blues having already qualified from their Champions League group, Tuchel did field a much-changed team.
If the 28-year-old doesn’t make the starting eleven against Everton on Thursday or Wolves at the weekend, then it may be a subject worth revisiting. For now, though, it is not something that fans should be worried about.
