BT Sport pundit Michael Owen has praised Chelsea forward Kai Havertz for his improved performances in recent games.

As well as predicting the result for the Blues’ clash against Newcastle this afternoon, Owen was keen to highlight the important contributions that Havertz has been making:

“It’s clearly been a strange and difficult week for Chelsea off the pitch but on it, they took care of business against Norwich. I really like the way Kai Havertz has been playing of late. He’s becoming the key man for this team in attack. He links the play, makes some great runs, and has started scoring regularly.”

“Things keep getting better for Newcastle. That win over Southampton was huge and leaves them on the verge of safety. Bruno Guimaraes arrived with a big reputation and price tag, but he showed glimpses of it on Wednesday. He hasn’t featured too much, but that back-heeled finish was sublime! Newcastle have shown so much improvement, and they’ll give Chelsea a game here. I still think Chelsea will have too much though.”

Owen has gone for a 2-1 win to Chelsea, which is a scoreline that every Blues supporter would take, considering how difficult the week has been for everyone associated with the club.

Newcastle’s resurgence under the management of Eddie Howe means this won’t be as straightforward as it would have been a few months ago. Combined with Chelsea’s current off-the-pitch issues, this has ‘banana skin’ written all over it.

However, after showing their professionalism against Norwich during the week, you’d expect Thomas Tuchel’s side to negotiate this tricky fixture. With the game being at home too, you would back them to put another three points on the board.
