Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has rowed back on previous comments questioning Chelsea’s title credentials.

The BT Sport pundit has been overly critical of Thomas Tuchel’s team this season, despite the Blues sitting top of the table, and he now freely admits that he was wrong to raise doubts about their chances of winning the league:

“I really didn’t fancy Chelsea at the start of the season. I’m not sure why looking (back) now. Look at that coach, the way he speaks, the way he coaches his team. They are well-drilled, they are confident, everyone knows what they are doing.”

Scholes’ previous remarks were very much out of step with other pundits who have been heavily backing Chelsea to mount a serious title challenge this campaign, so the fact that he has changed his mind isn’t entirely surprising.

The former England international did, however, say that the Blues’ chances of remaining top will very much depend on Romelu Lukaku returning to full fitness and getting back on the scoresheet.

The  Belgian came on for the last ten minutes of the game against Manchester United last night, having been sidelined for five weeks with an ankle injury.
