BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand says Chelsea forward Romelu Lukaku will have been disappointed by his own performances since returning to Stamford Bridge last summer.

The Blues broke their transfer record to sign the 28-year-old from Inter Milan for £97.5m but he has struggled to make an impact. Ferdinand says that, while he still believes Lukaku is an excellent striker, the Belgian has been well below his best:

“There’s no doubt Romelu Lukaku, for me, I think he’s a world-class striker. His goals record tells you that. You buy him to score goals. Keep him in the team he will score you goals. This season is not part of what Romelu Lukaku would’ve drawn up as a script for himself, so I would say he would shout louder than anybody that he feels he’s underachieved.”

The fact that manager Thomas Tuchel didn’t even use Lukaku when Chelsea needed a goal against Everton last weekend tells you all you need to know about how far the Belgian has fallen.

Reports suggest that Tuchel backed the move to sign Lukaku last year, with the German adamant that he needed a number nine, but the player’s inability to adapt to the Blues’ style of play has come as a surprise to everyone at the club.

A departure in the summer does seem inevitable, but there are big question marks over who would be able to afford the former Manchester United forward.
