Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Chelsea has sent scouts to watch Villarreal defender Pau Torres “several times”.

The Italian journalist tweeted last week that the Blues had been watching the Spanish international but, writing in his column for CBS Sports, he revealed the extent of their interest in the player.

Manchester United and Manchester City are also thought to be keeping tabs on Torres, who has been a key part of Villarreal’s progress to the semi-finals of the Champions League this season.

The existence of a release clause is expected to make a deal for the centre-back more attractive. It is believed that the 25-year-old can be signed for between €55m (£46.3m) and €60m (£50.5m).

Of course, with Chelsea unable to sign players due to their ownership situation, a move for Torres may only happen nearer the end of the summer. Signing a replacement for the outgoing Antonio Rudiger will, though, be a priority for manager Thomas Tuchel.
