Chelsea are weighing up a possible move for Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez as they look at strengthening their midfield options, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The Italian journalist says the club would like to sign West Ham’s Declan Rice but the England international is not the only player under consideration:
“They want to do something in midfield. It could be Declan Rice. Saul Niguez is another player they’ve been considering but there’s nothing advanced yet. He’s leaving Atletico Madrid this summer because they’re signing Rodrigo De Paul.”
As Romano says, Niguez is expected to leave Atletico in the coming weeks, with reports in Spain suggesting that the La Liga champions have slapped an €80m (£69m) asking price on the 26-year-old.
It would make the midfielder a cheaper option than Rice, with numerous reports in the English press having stated that West Ham won’t consider selling for less than £100m.
Chelsea are not the only team pursuing Niguez, though, with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United also believed to be monitoring the Spanish international’s situation.
No club has made a formal bid for the player, yet, so the Blues are unlikely to rush into making an approach, with Rice also still a viable target.
