Juventus centre-back Matthijs de Ligt does have a release clause that comes into effect at the end of the season, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Chelsea have been heavily linked with the Dutchman in the Italian media over the last few months, and Romano says any team can sign the defender if they are prepared to pay €150m (£129m) next summer:

“Matthijs de Ligt has a release clause into his contract with Juventus. This clause is valid from next summer, so 2022, it’s a clause valid for 150millon euros. So, de Ligt will be available on the market for 150million Euros. This clause was part of the contract since he signed with Juventus, so Mino Raiola was planning for this clause as he did for Erling Haaland with Borussia Dortmund [and] he did the same for de Ligt with Juventus.”

Whether de Ligt would interest Chelsea at that price, it is up for debate. There is no doubt that the Blues are likely to sign a new centre-half but it is assumed that they will renew their interest in Sevilla’s Jules Kounde when the January transfer window opens.

The Frenchman has his own buyout clause, which reportedly stands at €80m (£69m) so he would be substantially cheaper than de Ligt. However, there is a scenario whereby Chelsea may pursue two centre-backs.

Antonio Rudiger is out of contract in June and there is growing uncertainty about his future at Stamford Bridge. Were the German to move on, it may force the Blues to go after a replacement. De Ligt may well be looked at as a potential option.
