Chelsea’s ownership situation could have knock-on effects for the futures of players whose contracts expire in 2023, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The crisis at the club has already impacted some (such as Antonio Rudiger, Cesar Azpilicueta and Andreas Christensen) who can leave when their current deals end in June but, speaking on is Here We Go podcast, Romano also raised question marks about the futures of other stars:

“Marcos Alonso is still waiting for an answer from Chelsea; no one can give him an answer now. N’Golo Kante, after the Champions League final, they [Chelsea] told him that they would give him a new deal, with a new salary but now he’s waiting and nothing is going on right now. Another player, Jorginho, with many Italian clubs attracted by the possibilities in the summer, he loves Chelsea, he wants to stay, but no new deal, and he’s out of contract in 2023, so the situation for Chelsea is, absolutely, standby, and it’s dangerous.”

To be honest, many supporters wouldn’t be too concerned if Alonso’s contract was allowed to run down, while there are a number of fans who wouldn’t be against offloading Jorginho this summer if the right bid comes along.

However, the situation is very different with Kante. The 30-year-old is a key player for manager Thomas Tuchel and it will be hoped that the takeover of the club happens quickly so a contract extension can be agreed as soon as possible with the Frenchman.
