Former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has criticised Romelu Lukaku, Andreas Christensen and Malang Sarr for their performances during the surprise 4-2 defeat to Arsenal last night.

Christensen was at fault for the opening goal, with his under-hit backpass finding Eddie Nketiah, who duly slotted the ball past Edouard Mendy. Lukaku was subbed just before the hour mark after another anonymous display, while Sarr failed to clear his lines for Nketiah’s second goal. Hasselbaink feels the trio simply didn’t care enough about winning yesterday evening:

“Certain players are getting an opportunity, Lukaku, Sarr, Christensen… Going back to Lukaku, he doesn’t do enough. If you want to be the man you need to run around, you need to try to show that you are bothered.”

“You need to want to suffer, he doesn’t run around, he doesn’t go into gaps, he doesn’t demand the ball off his players, he doesn’t go into space. They are very static and if you’re going to have that, if players are going to play like that you have no chance.”

“They play against a motivated Arsenal team who have lost three matches in a row who have something to prove, you need to go over the top of them, show some passion. There was no passion from Lukaku, and Sarr and Christensen – they cannot make those kind of mistakes in these kind of matches.”

It could be argued that Hasselbaink was being slightly harsh on Sarr, who simply doesn’t have the quality to play at Premier League level. The criticism of Christensen is certainly fair, with the Dane seemingly already thinking about his move to Barcelona.

Lukaku is the most concerning out of the three, though. The Belgian is showing no real determination to recapture his best form and, at this point, it would be a surprise if he doesn’t leave Stamford Bridge this summer.
