Racing Genk sporting director Dimitri De Conde has suggested that Liverpool should have snapped up striker Paul Onuachu from the Belgian club this summer.

The giant Nigerian forward scored 35 goals in all competitions last season and was heavily linked with both West Ham and Arsenal. However, his €30m (£26m) asking price put off potential suitors.

De Conde says that after watching the Reds struggle to break down ten-man Chelsea last weekend, he feels that manager Jurgen Klopp could do with a striker like Onuachu:

“Have you seen Liverpool-Chelsea? Liverpool has top strikers, but none with the profile of Onuachu. He would have scored against ten men. I’m not saying that Paul would complete 90 minutes every week at Liverpool, but a club like that could really use him.”

At £26m, there is no way that Liverpool would consider going after the Nigerian international, despite his great scoring record in recent seasons. He turned 27 in May and has never played in a top European league.

Onuachu is an imposing figure at 6ft 7 but, while some supporters could probably see him as a Peter Crouch-like figure in the squad, he wouldn’t be suitable for Klopp’s style of play.
