Ex-Liverpool defender Jose Enrique is hoping that Benfica striker Darwin Nunez turns down interest from Manchester United in favour of a move to the Reds this summer.

The Uruguayan, who scored 34 goals in all competitions last season, has been heavily linked with a transfer to Old Trafford in recent days, but Enrique believes the forward would be wise to snub the Red Devils and make the switch to Anfield instead:

“I hope this is not true [about a move to United] and he come[s] to us instead. Top player that can become world-class under Klopp if we sell Sadio Mane.”

We shall have to wait and see who emerges as Liverpool’s number one target to replace Sadio Mane. Jurgen Klopp is on record as saying he admires Nunez so he will surely be a candidate that will be considered.

There are, however, plenty of other teams who are keen on signing the 22-year-old, with Chelsea, Arsenal, West Ham, Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain all thought to be in the mix. Benfica are also looking for between €80m (£68m) and €100m (£85m) for the player, which means the Reds may have to get close to breaking their transfer record if they want to secure his services.
