Ex-Liverpool defender Glen Johnson believes his former club should be targeting Brighton’s Yves Bissouma as a replacement for Naby Keita.
The Seagulls have reportedly slapped a £50m price tag on the Malian international but Johnson feels that he would offer a lot more to Jurgen Klopp’s side than Keita:
“I still think he [Keita] is a good player and he’s certainly a good squad player but he’s never been a player consistently in their starting XI. If they could agree a deal to sell Keita and then get someone like Yves Bissouma in as a replacement, then that would probably be good business. With big signings like Keita you want them to be banging the door down rather than accepting a role as a squad player.”
Both players will have one year remaining on their respective contracts in the summer, so Johnson could be on to something by suggesting Bissouma as a potential option.
In terms of Keita, it’s difficult to see the club extending his current deal, considering his injury record, so a departure at the end of the season could be on the cards, leaving open the possibility that someone else could come in.
As for Bissouma, whether Brighton will lower their valuation to an amount that would be acceptable to the Reds, though, it is difficult to say. There are also other complications.
The 25-year-old has some personal issues to resolve, while there are reports that Liverpool could be joined by the likes of Manchester United, Aston Villa and Arsenal in pursuing the player.
