Ex-Liverpool and Chelsea right-back Glen Johnson is expecting the Reds to challenge for trophies this season despite their lack of activity in the transfer market.

Jurgen Klopp’s side only signed one senior player, Ibrahima Konate for £36m, and while Johnson admits he would have liked to have seen his former team do more business, he expects them to be in the mix come May:

“I can still see them winning silverware. It’s obvious that they’ve been quiet in the market but to be honest they’ve always been quiet. They’re not always the big spenders and we all know how they do their transfers, working with statistics and other forms of data. They’ll only buy players that suit all their criteria. I do wish that they had done more in the transfer market but it doesn’t surprise me that they didn’’t.”

There is unlikely to be a Liverpool fan out there who isn’t concerned by the club’s decision not to spend more on bringing in new recruits over the summer.

They have seen their title rivals such as Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United improve their squads, and there is a fear that the Reds could be left behind.

However, they have strengthened a key weakness from last season, the centre-back position, and they are still pretty much the same team that finished the season on 99 points just 14 months ago.
