Ex-Liverpool and Chelsea defender Glen Johnson is expecting the Reds to come out on top when his two former clubs face each other in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday.
While Johnson believes this will be Thomas Tuchel side’s best chance of silverware this season, he thinks that their opponent’s excellent recent form will prove the decisive factor:
“I’m going to go for Liverpool. I think the way they can play in these big games, they’ve just got a lot more going for them, in their performances, and their momentum shall we say. We want to see some entertainment. I don’t want it to be a 1-0 or a 0-0 for sure. Both teams are capable of scoring aren’t they. Let’s hope for a big open game and make it exciting. But I fancy Liverpool. I’d probably say out of the two clubs it’s Chelsea’s most likely chance of silverware this season. This is probably their best chance. They’ve got one game and I can’t see them getting to another final at the moment. I think this is their biggest chance for some silverware.”
The form book does go out the window in cup finals so it’s probably not wise to put too much stock in Johnson’s remarks. Jurgen Klopp’s men should be favourites but Chelsea are very strong defensively.
If the Blues do get the first goal, you would back them to hold out for the win so it’s crucial that Liverpool push them back from the first minute and prevent them from getting any joy on counter-attacks.
Manchester City have shown how Chelsea can be dominated in their two league encounters this campaign, but the Champions League final last season shows you they can be a tough nut to crack when ahead. We shall see how the game plays out.
