The father of Ajax midfielder Ryan Gravenberch has backed his son to stay in the Netherlands for a least another season.

Liverpool and Chelsea were linked with signing the 18-year-old in the Italian media last month but Gravenberch Snr has poured cold water on those claims:

“I really think he should take a step at Ajax first. He has to climb in the hierarchy and stand up more for himself within the squad. I’m not going to push him to do that, that makes no sense to Ryan. But he also realizes that. He also thinks it is best for him to stay at Ajax. In my heart – and also in Ryan’s – he first continues to develop at Ajax before he takes a step higher.”

Gravenberch has also been on Manchester United and Arsenal’s radar over the last year, having broken into Ajax’s first team last season. The midfielder has been compared to Georginio Wijnaldum and he already has three caps for Netherlands’ senior side, after being handed his debut by manager Frank de Boer in the 4-2 defeat to Turkey back in March.

Liverpool will undoubtedly be keeping tabs on Gravenberch’s development and it will be interesting to see whether the Reds or another Premier League team tests Ajax’s resolve by submitting a bid for the teenager this summer.

Some reports have suggested that the Eredivisie side would accept £30m for the player, although that figure does seem to be on the low side.
