Liverpool are “particularly keen” on snapping up Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araujo, according to ESPN.

The website claims that the Reds have been scouting the Uruguayan international “throughout 2021”, with Manchester United having also taken an interest.

Barca are trying to tie down Araujo to a new contract but there are concerns about his salary demands  While the likes of Ansu Fati and Pedri have agreed extensions, the Catalan club’s debts mean they cannot afford to give all of their young players a big pay rise.

Players such as Araujo are, therefore, vulnerable to being poached, with Liverpool in a position to swoop in, much like when RB Leipzig secured the services of Ilaix Moriba.

Araujo’s current deal does expire in 2023 so a decision will need to be made on his future pretty soon. Chelsea have also been mentioned as a potential suitor for the 22-year-old in other reports and interest in the Uruguayan is expected to increase ahead of next summer.
