Liverpool legend Phil Thompson is expecting his former club to finish behind Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title this season.
The Citizens have already signed Jack Grealish for a British record fee from Aston Villa, and if they snap up Harry Kane, Thompson feels it will be all over for the Manchester club’s rivals. In terms of Liverpool, the former Sky Sports pundit told Paddy Power that he hopes Virgil van Dijk’s return will help them to finish second:
“Virgil van Dijk can hit those 40, 50 yard balls, start attacks, the whole defence will be more comfortable now he’s back. Liverpool shouldn’t be as wasteful this season. Mo Salah had a great season scoring goals, but we also missed so many. Diogo Jota’s going to be in his prime. Liverpool, for me, will finish second to Manchester City.”
When it comes to the rest of the top four, Thompson has gone for Manchester United in third and Chelsea in fourth, with both Arsenal and Tottenham missing out on the Champions League places once again.
City are the clear favourites for the title, despite losing to Leicester City in the Community Shield last weekend, and Liverpool will have to be at their absolute best if they are to compete with them this campaign.
