Liverpool’s incoming sporting director Julian Ward is the one pressing for the Reds to sign Porto winger Luis Diaz, according to A BOLA (via Sport Witness).

Ward, who is currently Michael Edwards’ assistant but will take charge at the end of the season, is believed to have been keeping tabs on Diaz’s development and he wants to bring him to Anfield.

The Colombian international has also been linked with Manchester United, Chelsea and Newcastle in recent months but it appears that Liverpool are red hot favourites for his signature at the moment.

A BOLA report that the Reds are willing to pay €70m (£58.3m) up front, with another €11m (£8.3m) in performance-related add-ons. While that does amount to the winger’s €80m (£66.7m) release clause, it won’t all be paid at once so Porto do have a choice about whether to accept the deal or not.

It must be emphasised that this story comes via a far-from-reliable Portuguese tabloid. The Athletic‘s Liverpool correspondent James Pearce has already denied claims that a deal is on the cards.
