Journalist Fabrizio Romano has reiterated claims that Liverpool have won the race for RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate.

The Italian reporter revealed last month that the Frenchman had agreed a five-year deal with the Reds but, so far, there has been no confirmation that the transfer has been finalised. Even so, Romano expects an announcement very soon:

“The agreement with the player is done. They want to sign the player. It is just a case of the clubs negotiating. The player wants to go. It is a five-year contract. In some weeks, it will be complete.”

Konate has also been linked with Chelsea in recent months, so there is a concern that the Blues may step in and hijack the deal, but from what Romano says, it appears that the move to Anfield only needs to be rubberstamped.

The 21-year-old is believed to have a €35m (£30m) buyout fee and, if that is the case, there is no need for Liverpool to contact Leipzig. They can simply trigger the release clause and get the transfer over the line at any time, and it looks like it should happen by the end of the month.
