Liverpool face Inter Milan in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie at the San Siro tomorrow night. The reigning Serie A champions won’t make it easy for the Reds but the statisticians at FiveThirtyEight believe the Merseyside club are heavy favourites to make it through to the quarter-finals.
They have rated Jurgen Klopp’s side as having a 72% chance of qualifying for the next round, which is a pretty high probability, but they are not favoured as highly as some of the other Premier League teams in the competition.
Manchester City have a 92% chance of making it through, but the fact that they are facing Sporting Lisbon may well account for such a high percentage. The same is the case for Chelsea whose 90% rating is down to them playing Lille.
Manchester United, in contrast, are taking on Atletico Madrid and their 40% probability reflects the difficulty of their opponent. For Liverpool, though, it seems they have a very good chance of progressing further in the tournament.
