Liverpool and Atletico Madrid have entered the battle to sign Napoli winger Lorenzo Insigne, according to journalist Fabio Santini.

The 30-year-old, who has been starring for Italy at the European Championships, has one year left on his contract and could be available for a relatively low fee this summer if he doesn’t sign an extension.

Santini says there is a sizeable difference between the two sides in terms of salary demands. Insigne wants €5m a season while Napoli are only willing to offer €3.5m currently, with the Reds keeping an eye on developments:

“To make the situation even more complicated is the intense competition for the player. I know for sure that there is a strong interest from Liverpool and Atletico Madrid on Lorenzo Insigne.”

It is believed that Liverpool are keen on strengthening their forward options this summer, but the Merseyside club don’t usually go for players the wrong side of 30.

However, as we saw last summer with Thiago, sporting director Michael Edwards can be flexible when it comes to age, especially when a player is running down their contract and is available for a good price.

The likes of Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal and Barcelona have also been linked with a move for Insigne, so we shall see if Liverpool also join the race for the winger.
