Liverpool are still unlikely to sign Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland even if he is available for €75m (£64m) in 2022, according to BBC journalist (and Bundesliga expert) Constantin Eckner.

There has been a lot of talk about Chelsea making a move for the Norwegian international this summer, but if he does stay with Dortmund for another season, a release clause will be triggered that will spark a scramble for the striker’s signature.

The biggest problem for Liverpool, according to Eckner, is not so much the price tag, but the wages, agent fees and player connections; all of which would make the Reds outsiders to snap up Haaland:

“The €75m (£63.9m) which is the release clause from next summer. They can plan for that because one club will come and sign him – that is a given. Will it be Liverpool? I doubt it. The financial part, Liverpool might not be in a situation to do that deal, but I am never sure.”

“Real Madrid are interested in Haaland but they couldn’t offer Raphael Varane a big contract now, so I’m not sure about some of the finances there either. Barcelona have money for transfers but it is still dicey for them. PSG, Chelsea and Man City have the money and City have the Alfie Haaland connection [his father previously played for them].”

“If there is no cap on agents fees, which there are still talks about this with FIFA, then it could be €20m to Mino Raiola, €15m to Alfie Haaland, and €20m yearly salary over a five-year contract. Even with the €75m transfer clause, it is a huge deal to do.”

Most journalists believe next summer will be a huge one for Liverpool in terms of making changes to the first team. A number of players could have one year remaining on their contracts by then and there are expected to be a fair few departures.

If that proves to be the case then a revamp of the squad would be needed, and Haaland would certainly be a superb addition if they were to pull it off. At the moment, though, it seems a remote possibility.
