Manchester City may look to reignite their interest in Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez as they look for a possible replacement for Sergio Aguero, according to Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth.

The Citizens, along with Barcelona and Chelsea, were linked with the Argentinian international last year, and Sheth says the Manchester club still consider the 23-year-old a target:

“Another striker to mention that City have constantly been linked with is Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez. City, it seems, have a long-standing interest in him. But if Aguero doesn’t sign a new contract or is not offered a new contract, then all bets are off. City will be in the market for a big player – make no mistake about it.”

Whether Sheth is merely speculating here, it remains to be seen. Lautaro has not signed a new contract at Inter, and his reported €111m (£99m) release clause still remains in place.

Having scored nine league goals in 18 games this season, though, he would probably not represent value for money compared to someone like Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland.

With the Norwegian having plenty of other suitors, City may just be keeping their options open. Lautaro’s style of play is certainly more similar to Aguero’s, although his lack of killer instinct in front of goal may count against him.
