UEFA president Alexander Ceferin believes the fact that the Premier League ‘big six’ pulled out of the European Super League first and admitted their mistake, may well see them get lighter punishments than the other clubs involved.

Ceferin is adamant that all 12 teams will have to have the book thrown at them for trying to set up a rival tournament to the Champions League, but he wants to make sure each club is treated fairly:

“For me there are three groups of this 12 – the English Six, who went out first, then the other three [Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, Inter] after them and then the ones who feel that Earth is flat and they think the Super League still exists. And there is a big difference between those. But everyone will be held responsible. In what way, we will see.”

“I don’t want to say disciplinary process but it has to be clear that everyone has to be held responsible in a different way. Is it disciplinary? Is it the decision of the executive committee? We will see. It’s too early to say.”

It remains to be seen what types of punishment UEFA will consider. A ban from European competition would be the most extreme measure, while fines would probably be the best that English clubs could hope for.

The Premier League itself is also believed to be considering taking action against the likes of City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal for their involvement, although no discussions have been held on what measures will be taken.
