Manchester City have been unable to sell, on average, 2465 tickets per Premier League game this season, which puts them fifth out of 20 for the most empty seats in the top flight.

However, Spurs come out on top with their new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium having had, on average, 8284 empty seats per match, at a cost of £165,680 per matchday. Surprisingly, Chelsea, whose ground holds only 41,837, averages 3,282 unsold tickets, which places them second on the list.

Website OLGB.com worked out each Premier League club’s average attendance this season and compared it to the lowest cost of an available ticket to estimate the amount of revenue lost per home match:

  1. Tottenham – £165,680 revenue lost (8,284 unsold tickets) per game
  2. Chelsea – £154,254 (3,282)
  3. Southampton – £108,416 (3,388)
  4. Burnley – £101,790 (3,393)
  5. Manchester City – £86,275 (2,465)
  6. Crystal Palace – £66,272 (1,744)
  7. Watford – £60,156 (1,671)
  8. Leeds – £40,100 (1,604)
  9. West Ham – £39,950 (1,598)
  10. Newcastle – £38,853 (1,439)
  11. Wolves – £37,110 (1,237)
  12. Manchester United – £35,402 (1,142)
  13. Brighton – £30,060 (1,002)
  14. Everton – £16,320 (510)
  15. Liverpool – £13,949 (377)
  16. Brentford – £13,650 (455)
  17. Norwich – £9,390 (313)
  18. Leicester – £6,526 (251)
  19. Arsenal – £27,326 (1,051)
  20. Aston Villa – £21,996 (846)

Whilst it doesn’t dispel the myth that rival fans promote about the Etihad, it does demonstrate that there are a number of other high-profile clubs in the league that don’t fill their grounds.
