Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp says he was somewhat surprised that the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United didn’t take a chance on signing Manchester City’s John Stones before the transfer window closed.

There was talk that Spurs were looking at signing the England international on loan before they pulled out of a deal, but Redknapp feels more clubs should have looked at the defender and taken a calculated risk:

“I’m surprised someone didn’t take John Stones. I’m a big fan. I think he’s a real player. If someone got hold of him and got some confidence in him, he’s got all the tools. I like him, personally. Someone like Arsenal, Chelsea. It’s a mixed bag for Manchester United. Ole needs players for now, not tomorrow.”

With Nicolas Otamendi having left for Benfica, Stones may well still get some game time this season, even after the arrival of Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake over the summer.

There will be question marks over Eric Garcia’s commitment to the cause following his refusal to sign a new contract, with it being assumed that he will leave for Barcelona next year.

Whether Stones can turn around his career at the Etihad Stadium, though, we shall have to wait and see.
